SPEECH THERAPY AT DENTAL FRATERNITY
Incorrect articulation and slurred speech is rooted in improper muscle memory of the tongue and its positioning in the mouth. By regular exercises with a speech therapist, the defect can be corrected, and as a result patient can return to clean and clear pronunciation of all the sounds.
MIOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY AT DENTAL FRATERNITY
Swallowing is a reflex and we do it from 1000 to 2000 times a day. Improper position of the tongue during this action causes pressure on the teeth and myofunctional disorders. This seemingly small thing proves the meaning of the saying about “little by little does the trick” – in the area of our speech organ.
Then appears a deformation of the jaw, unfavorable tension of the facial muscles and, as a consequence – speech defects.
In order to reverse this process, you should start myofunctional therapy conducted by a speech therapist who recommends an appropriate set of exercises. The speech therapist shows a set of exercises during the patient’s visit, and the patient repeats it later at home.
Thanks to this, the resting position of the tongue becomes correct again (i.e. the tongue touches the palate during rest), the mouth is closed, breathing takes place through the nose, and the tongue correctly pumps liquids and food down the throat.
The most desirable effect of therapy is the optimal functioning of the speech organ, proper articulation and pronunciation of all syllables.

FAQ
WHAT ARE THE PRICES OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED SERVICES?
The cost of the first consultation with myofunctional therapy (60 minutes) is 280 PLN. Follow-up visits with myofunctional therapy cost 250 PLN.
WHO IS MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY INTENDED FOR?
For people with: open mouth, mouth breathing, thickened and reddened lower lip, moist lower lip, saliva in the corners of the mouth, tongue in a resting position pressing against the teeth or lying between the teeth, articulation disorders, often with /s /, /sz/ and /t, d, n, l/; poorly expressed facial expressions, posture problems, rehabilitation after orthodontic, dental, surgical and implantological procedures.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF UNTREATED MYOFUNCTIONAL DISORDER?
- Persistent articulation problems and/or slurred pronunciation
- Misalignment of the jaws and teeth (e.g. strongly protruding front teeth, crossbite, open bite, etc.)
- Temporomandibular joint problems.
- Periodontitis due to the tongue pressure on the gums.
IS TONGUE WORK RELATED TO MALOCCLUSION?
Yes, speech therapists consider the tongue to be the "first orthodontic appliance.” If the tongue improperly performs functions in the mouth, such as swallowing, it can cause malocclusion. Therefore, it is very important to see a speech therapist before orthodontic treatment, because the "misaligned" tongue after the treatment may cause a return of the defect.
WHY CAN’T I SAY THE “R” SOUND?
One of the causes of rhotacism may be a shortened frenulum of the tongue. It is then necessary to make a diagnosis and assess to what extent the shortening affects articulation and other functions in the oral cavity.
WHAT IS THE CORRECT POSITION OF THE TONGUE AT REST?
We talk about the correct resting position of the tongue when its middle and front part is raised up and adheres to the alveolar ridge and hard palate. The outer edges of the tongue should adhere to the inner side of the gingival arch.
WHAT DOES THE SPEECH THERAPY DEAL WITH?
The goal of myofunctional therapy is to achieve the correct resting position of the tongue, mouth closure and proper swallowing. This is achieved through appropriate exercises of the tongue, lips and whole body muscles, performed systematically under the supervision of a therapist and continued at home.
HOW DOES THE TREATMENT AND THERAPY WITH A SPEECH THERAPIST LOOK LIKE?
Myofunctional therapy helps to correct improper muscle work of the articulatory apparatus, and it is based on six blocks of exercises: ZAP, LAP, body exercises, tongue exercises, sucking exercises, swallowing exercises. At first exercises of the tongue and lips are introduced, and thanks to them proper muscle tone, mobility and location in the oral cavity are obtained. Only when the aforementioned abilities are established, patient move on to practicing sucking and swallowing. In addition to the above-mentioned stages of exercise, full-body exercises are introduced simultaneously. The point at which therapy ends should be the successful automation of new, correct skills and their application in daily life. Myofunctional therapy leads to the proper work of orofacial muscles, improvement of the tongue, lips, cheeks, improvement of the ability to swallow and properly breathing, and finally to eliminating speech impediments.
WHAT DOES A SPEECH THERAPY EVALUATION OF THE SPEECH APPARATUS IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS INCLUDE?
Speech therapy diagnosis is an action aimed at recognizing a speech defect or disorder, which is assessed on the basis of an analysis of the examined person's condition, obtained using available research methods. Speech therapy diagnosis is the basis for developing a speech therapy program. Speech therapy diagnosis includes:
- recognition of the disorder
- therapeutic indications
- forecasting
SPEECH THERAPY AND ORTHODONTICAL TREATMENT - WHY IS IT WORTH TO COMBINE THEM?
Speech therapy facilitates orthodontic treatment, can shorten its duration, and is helpful in preventing recurrence of malocclusion. It should be individual, vary accordingly to the type and severity of the speech defect and malocclusion, as well as the possibility of removing or reducing dysfunctions, parafunctions or additional anatomical abnormalities. If there appears an acquired malocclusion, the removal or reduction of the speech defect will result in more effective orthodontic treatment.
