Conservative treatment is the prevention of caries and the treatment of carious tissues or post-traumatic tooth cavities.
Disease prevention is carried out using many techniques, including: neutralizing tooth hypersensitivity, rebuilding damaged fillings, removing tartar and plaque, sandblasting and fluoridation of teeth.

The silver-graphite color of amalgam fillings clearly contrasts with the natural shade of the teeth, which causes aesthetic discomfort for patients who wear them. However, the reasons for replacing amalgam are not only aesthetic. Fillings made of an alloy of mercury with other metals are characterized by a strong thermal conductivity, which may affect the pain associated with the consumption of hot or cold meals. In addition, the amalgam structure does not perfectly bond with tooth enamel. For this reason, microorganisms responsible for the development of caries accumulate in the place of contact of such a filling with tooth tissues.
The indication for removal of this type of filling is often the recognition of an ongoing carious process in the sealed tooth, but it is also worth doing it prophylactically, before noticing carious cavities. The filling replacement procedure involves cleaning the tooth, then removing the filling with a drill, subsequently extracting the remains of the filling and then placing a new type of filling.

The cofferdam, commonly known as the “dental dam”, is a popular medical separator which task is to isolate the treated tooth from the lips and cheeks. The use of a cofferdam increases the hygiene level of the procedure and speeds up its process.
Treatment in a cofferdam enables, first of all, to maintain dryness in the area of the teeth that are being treated. In addition, the cofferdam is a barrier that prevents microorganisms contained in saliva from getting to the tooth, as well as protects the patient from oral injuries. Using a cofferdam provides the doctor with better visibility and access to the teeth by moving the tongue, cheeks and lips away from the surgical field. It has a significant impact on the precision and effectiveness of the procedure.
